Overview

Video monitors for drones are used to display camera feeds at ground stations, controller setups and other aerial video monitoring positions. They can provide a larger or more visible image than an integrated controller display and are particularly useful when image evaluation is required during outdoor operation.

Depending on the model, available features can include HDMI, SDI, high-brightness displays, touchscreen operation and different mounting or power options. The appropriate monitor depends on the video output of the receiver or controller, required screen size, ambient light conditions and the way the display will be mounted. For other monitor types, see our Video Monitors.

Applications
  • Drone ground stations and controller setups
  • Aerial camera and live video monitoring
  • Inspection and outdoor video applications
  • Mobile field monitoring
Key Features
  • Displays for drone and ground-station video feeds
  • Depending on the model HDMI, SDI or other video interfaces
  • Options with high brightness or touchscreen operation
  • Different mounting and power options for mobile use

What are the advantages of using an external monitor with a drone ground station?

An external monitor can provide a larger viewing area than an integrated controller display and, depending on the model, higher brightness for outdoor operation. It can also provide a separate image display for a camera operator, observer or other member of the production team. Whether an external monitor is useful depends on the controller or receiver outputs, required viewing size and operating environment.

Which video interfaces should I check for compatibility with my drone or receiver setup?

The monitor input must match the video output provided by the drone receiver, controller or other equipment in the ground station. Depending on the monitor model, available interfaces can include HDMI or SDI. Check both the physical connection and the supported signal format before selecting a monitor, as interface availability varies between models.

How important is display brightness for outdoor drone monitoring?

Display brightness is an important consideration when a monitor is used outdoors because strong ambient light can reduce the visibility of the image. Selected monitors provide high-brightness displays for this type of application; for example, the Lilliput HT7S is specified with a 2000 nit display. Brightness should be considered together with reflections, viewing position and any additional sun protection used at the ground station.

How do I choose the right screen size for a drone ground station?

The appropriate screen size depends on viewing distance, available mounting space, portability and the number of people who need to see the image. A compact monitor can be practical for a mobile operator setup, while a larger display can provide more viewing area at a fixed or transportable ground station. Screen size should be considered together with monitor weight, mounting method, power requirements and video connections.

What should I consider when transporting a monitor for drone and field use?

For mobile operation, consider the monitor dimensions, weight, mounting method and the protection available during transport. Depending on the model, protective housings, cases or flightcase versions may be available. The appropriate solution depends on how frequently the equipment is transported and how the ground station is assembled and operated on location.

Which monitoring functions can be useful for aerial video applications?

Depending on the monitor model, additional functions can include waveform, false colour, focus assistance, HDR monitoring or 3D LUT support. These tools can assist with evaluating exposure, focus or the appearance of the camera image during production. The available functions vary considerably between models, so the individual product specification should be checked according to the requirements of the aerial video workflow.

Is a touchscreen monitor useful for drone monitoring applications?

A touchscreen can provide direct access to monitor menus and settings and may simplify operation in some ground-station setups. Touchscreen functionality is available on selected monitors, including the Lilliput HT7S. Whether touch operation is preferable to physical controls depends on the mounting position, operating conditions and the user's preferred workflow.
