Hoodman H-400 Sun Hood for 3.5" to 4" Viewfinders and Monitors

The Hoodman H-400 sun hood reduces disruptive lateral light incidence on 3.5" to 4" displays and improves image control during outdoor shoots, studio applications with strong lighting, or mobile productions. The improved shading keeps the monitor image more clearly visible, allowing focus, framing, and exposure to be assessed more reliably.

Attachment is via rubber bands, making it gentle, residue-free, and possible without any permanent modification to the viewfinder or monitor.

Questions & Answers

What monitor sizes is the Hoodman H-400 compatible with?

The H-400 is designed for viewfinders and monitors with a screen diagonal of 3.5 to 4 inches, which corresponds to an interior diagonal of approximately 93 mm.

How is the sun hood attached to the monitor?

The H-400 is secured using two sewn-in rubber bands that are adjustable via hook-and-loop fasteners. No permanent modification to the monitor or viewfinder is required.

Will the attachment leave any marks or residue on the monitor?

No. Because the hood is held in place solely by rubber bands and hook-and-loop fasteners, it can be removed cleanly and without leaving any residue on the display or its housing.

What are the interior dimensions of the H-400?

The interior dimensions are 75 mm in width, 59 mm in height, and 83 mm in depth.

What are the exterior dimensions of the H-400?

The exterior dimensions measure 85 mm in width, 70 mm in height, and 83 mm in depth.

In which shooting situations is the H-400 particularly useful?

It is especially beneficial during outdoor shoots in bright sunlight, studio productions with strong artificial lighting, and mobile productions where controlling ambient light on a small monitor is critical for reliable focus, framing, and exposure assessment.

Does the H-400 block light from all sides or only from specific directions?

The hood is designed primarily to reduce lateral light incidence, shielding the display from disruptive side light that can wash out the image and make accurate assessment of the picture difficult.

Can the rubber bands be adjusted to fit different monitor housings?

Yes. The two sewn-in rubber bands are adjustable via hook-and-loop fasteners, allowing the hood to be adapted to monitors and viewfinders with slightly varying housing sizes within the supported screen range.

Is the H-400 suitable for use with on-camera monitors as well as built-in viewfinders?

Yes. The attachment method is non-invasive and flexible enough for use on both dedicated on-camera monitors and built-in viewfinder screens, provided the display falls within the 3.5 to 4 inch size range.

How does shading the monitor improve the shooting workflow?

By reducing glare and stray light on the display, the image on screen remains clearly visible even in bright conditions. This allows the operator to more accurately judge focus, image framing, and exposure without relying on guesswork or moving to a shaded position.
